No. 2 Bears Explode in Second Half to Open League Play with Win

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Dallas College Brookhaven's second-ranked women's soccer team opened up the floodgates in the second half of its Dallas Athletic Conference opener Friday, beating Dallas College North Lake, 8-0.

The Bears (2-2-0, 1-0-0 DAC) scored seven goals in the second half, taking advantage of a tired North Lake squad to win the first league game. It was Brookhaven's first win since the season opener 29 days earlier. It was also the Bears' first shutout of the season.

North Lake fell to 1-4-2, 0-1-0 in the DAC.

Natalie Lopez, Whitni Newbill and Natalie Ipina each scored two goals, and Kayannah Moore and Stephanie Farias each had one – only Moore's gamewinner coming in the first half on a double assist from Sayer Taylor and Gracie Murillo six minutes into the match. Ipina, who scored both of her goals within a four-minute span in the final 10:00, also had an assist.

Murillo and Taylor each had two assists, and Farias finished with three points, adding an assist on Lopez's first goal 11:00 into the second half that broke the Blazers' back.

Brookhaven, who will host Dallas College Eastfield Tuesday, was credited with 29 shots, including 16 on goal.

Bears starting goalkeeper Emma Garces, who picked up her first career win, was forced to stop one shot in 85 minutes. Allyson Kolba played the final five minutes between the posts.

Newbill scored both of her goals within a three-minute span in the second half. It was the first time the returning All-American found the back of the net this season. Her second goal gave the Bears a 4-0 lead. That's where the score remained for the next 18 minutes until Lopez converted a pass from Ipina for her second goal of the night. Farias scored a minute later on an assist from Meah Perez, and Ipina struck the back of the net the following minute when Roselyn Soto hooked up with her on the first of her two goals.

The eight goals are the most since the Bears had a season-high nine against their next opponent on Sophomore Day last season.
