Brookhaven Falls in OT in Championship Game

HERKIMER, N.Y. – Dallas College Brookhaven women's soccer team fell to Delta College 1-0 in overtime in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Championship Sunday.

The Bears (16-2-2) finished as the runner-up for the second time, both times in finals against Delta (17-0-1).

Delta's Isabella Workman scored in the 98th minute for the game's lone goal as the Pioneers repeated as champs.

Brookhaven's Ava Little banged a shot off the crossbar in the 95th minute. It was the Bears' only shot in the overtime. Brookhaven goalkeeper Miranda Estrada stopped a shot by Alahna Beckett in the 94th minute, two minutes after making a save on Brooke Swartz.

Estrada, who finished with nine saves, stopped a shot by Morgan Ludwig in the 87th minute. She also stopped Grace Hall in the 86th minute and Beckett in the 83rd minute to keep the game scoreless. Estrada made five saves in the second half.

Brookhaven had 10 shots, including seven on goal. Delta attempted 11 shots, 10 on goal. The Bears outshot the Pioneers 6-2 in the first half. Delta outshot Brookhaven 6-3 in the second half and 3-1 in overtime.

Little had two shots in the second half, but both were saved by Delta keeper Mia Warner. Kate Carlson's shot in the 50th minute was also stopped by Warner, who finished with seven saves.

Little hit the post in the ninth minute, and 19 seconds later put another shot on frame, but Warner made the save. Justine Garnica and Emma Stewart also put shots on goal, but the Pioneers keeper stopped both.

It was the second straight overtime game for the Bears in the national tournament. 

It was Brookhaven's seventh trip to the national championship game and its fourth in the last five years.
